AUSTRALIAN WHITE IBIS
Both Ibis are similar in shape and size. The White Ibis is white with a distinctive black head and flight-feathers. It is often found in company with the Straw-necked.
Ibis belong to the same family as the larger Spoonbills which restrict their activities to shallow water unlike the Ibis which will look for food away from the water.
STRAW-NECKED IBIS
The bill, naked head and neck of the Straw-necked Ibis are black. The feathers of the upper parts and sides are iridescent black while its collar, underparts and tail are white. It has straw-coloured plumes on the front of its neck and breast which become even more distinctive when breeding.
It does not just keep to areas near water. Large flocks of Ibis may travel long distances in search of food. They are particularly keen to feed on the introduced white snails in local paddocks when they are on the move after rain.
