Albert Landseer began erecting a 'very large store' in 1867 on Daranda Terrace but he had already been in business on the site since 1857. Eventually other buildings, including a large four-story flour mill and chimney, were added to form the headquarters of a shipping business which included branches at Morgan and elsewhere and a number of paddle steamers and barges.

The general store closed in 1959 and the mill buildings were demolished and the present shopping centre built. Eventually the other buildings were also removed.

The former Brakenridge goods store in Luard Street was built in 1868 and measured 61 ft x 31 ft (18.6 m x 9.4 m).
