GREAT EGRET
The tallest of all the Egrets, whose head and neck is 1½ times as long as its body, a Great Egret is often seen in the Wetlands looking for food or hunting around the edge of the Lake. After standing motionless for a long interval it will suddenly thrust its large bill into the water.
When flying it folds its neck down on its chest and trails its long legs backwards. Its voice is a series of deep guttural rattling croaks.
CATTLE EGRET
This smaller relative of the Great Egret is a very sociable bird and often feeds with livestock, catching insects and other prey disturbed by the animals. They are sometimes to be seen in the wetlands below the railway station.
